Longfellow Home

Brattle Street is the location of the home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It is now a National Historic Site Currently closed for a major overhaul.

Longfellow was a very popular author and poet. His most well known works are The Courtship of Miles Standish, Paul Revere's Ride and The Song of Hiawatha. He also wrote the poem about the village blacksmith, underneath the spreading chestnut tree. The blacksmith and the tree were located at what is now number 54 Brattle Street. In 1835 he became professor of modern languages at Harvard. He was a frequent traveller to Europe, speaking 8 languages and reading 12!
