Walking Day 1

Beacon Hill

Walking towards downtown I became a little confused at a five way intersection, and took the wrong street. I then took a few back streets to return to my chosen path towards Boston Commons.

Street scene, Beacon Hill, Boston MA

Just a street scene on Beacon Hill. These streets were quite nice, and there were a number of new buildings, built in sympathy wit the existing structures. It's probably comparable to Paddington in Sydney.

Boston Public Garden

There are two large green areas between downtown Boston and the hotel at Copley Place. The smaller of the two is the Boston Public Garden which is like most public gardens - nicely maintained. The Garden was established in 1837. In early Boston this area was under water. It was filled in to form the "Back Bay" area. The Mayor Josiah Quincy decided this part should remain a public space, and thus was created the first botanical garden in the USA.

Play time, Boston Public Garden

The brass ducks allow children plenty of room burn off energy.

Swan Boat tour around pond in Boston Public Garden

These are called Swan Boats presumably because the captain/operator sits in the swan at the back. They are peddle powered, and circulate around a small lake.

Pond in Boston Public Garden

The lake, with the John Hancock tower in the background. John Hancock (1737 - 1793) was a merchant and financial backer of the early days of the War of Independence.

Cheers

'Cheers' bar from TV series (at least building used for outside shot); opposite Boston Public Garden

If you ever watched the TV series Cheers well here is the building used for the opening shots. It is on Beacon Street, opposite Boston Botanical Gardens.

The 'Cheers' sign

You can just make out the sign in this image.
