Leaving Seattle

June 9th

Marie and I were headed to Bainbridge Island to celebrate her friends Bill & Pat Gillingham's 50th wedding anniversary. First step was to catch the ferry to Bainbridge Island. We chose to go via the downtown Seattle ferry terminal. We could have gone to Edmonds, but decided downtown would be a little better. Just as well, since the Edmonds ferry run was stopped for 2 hours (with people stuck on a boat!) when there was a problem with the ferry terminal at Kingston.

Olympic Mountains from Coleman Ferry Dock in Seattle

The view from the western end of the ferry as it is loading cars and passengers at Coleman Dock in downtown Seattle. This photo is a little dark, which I have done to emphasise the Olympic Mountains, which are visible on the horizon, especially in the larger image.

View of downtown Seattle, including the "famous" Smith Tower, the building on the right with the pyramid shape on top. At various times this was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, and also the first to have an elevator (aka lift). It's still quite a pleasant looking building.

Seattle docks and sporting stadia. To the left of the red cranes is the still under construction football stadium on the site of the gone (but not yet missed) Kingdome. The only really visible part is the curved roof section. Safeco Field, named after a local insurance company, is the new baseball field, with a retractable roof to close up when it's raining. It's located to the right of the red cranes.

Looking over The Seattle Convention Center (as opposed to the State Convention Center). towards the Space Needle, and some of the new apartment buildings going up in that part of town.

Looking towards the Seattle Center, showing Key Arena (basketball), the building with the pyramid roof, and the Pacific Science Center located under the arches only just visible on the far right.
