The Mortons of Berrima

January 6th

A pleasant journey down the freeway/tollway took me to Berrima to see The Morton clan. Unfortunately I forgot to take a group picture, so you'll need to imagine that. Andrew and I worked together at KCS, and David (Andrew's father) was one of my profs at UNSW!

The Old House

The old house on the Morton estate

Definitely past its prime, this is the former residence on this block of land. It is now empty, but was in use for many years.

The cookhouse is out the back of the old house. It is, by any means, a substantial building for the time it was built. This makes one wonder whether it was originally built for some other purpose, such as housing convicts. But it needs to be remembered that fire was a serious hazard of previous centuries, and it was common to have the cookhouse a distinct building. Still, this does seem a major construction.

The cookhouse is currently "occupied" by a family of possums, comfortably living in the oven! This one did not escape in time to miss being captured.

The New House

As the old building was clearly unsuitable for accomodation, the council approved building of this new home, which fits right in to the flavour of Berrima with the obvious colonial style.

A very pleasant view from the "overflow" parking area, and showing the "front yard", with the house being to the right.
