Mt. Rainier Wilderness Map
Wording on the Plaque
In 1988, 97% of this park was designated as
The Mount Rainier Wilderness.
Wilderness areas also exist with neigbouring lands managed
by the U.S. Forest Service. Wilderness, as defined by
the Wilderness Act of 1964, allows for public use and
enjoyment while enhancing opportunities for solitude and
strengthening protection of resources.
Some people associate more personally with the word
wilderness.
Experiences and feelings evoked by wilderness include renewal ...
self-reliance ... and perhaps even anxiety. These are
individual and less tangible definitions, but they enrich
the human experience in ways that other words, and other
lands, might not.
