The Ferry To Kingston

One of the real benefits of riding a motorcycle on Washington State Ferries is that we are first on, and thus first off. Late arrivers are held until the end, and are last on, but not necessarily last off. The benefit to the Ferry System is that bikes use otherwise unusable space on the boats.

Edmonds/Kingston ferry, view of Mt. Baker

Mt. Baker, as viewed from the ferry, awaiting departure. I've darkened the image a little to make it clearer. Obviously today would have been a better day to visit Mt. Baker, but that's the luck of the draw. Mt. Shuksan would be to the right of the main peak, but I suspect it's not visible from here, which gives an impression of the height of the (invisible) main peak from yesterday.

Olympic Mountains from Edmonds/Kingston ferry

The Olympic Mountains, with the northern extremity of the Kitsap Peninsula in the foreground. Although it appears there is a wake in the water, we are still at the Edmonds Ferry Dock. While loading, the ferry's engines are kept pushing the boat into the dock.

Edmonds from the ferry to Kingston

At last, departure from Edmonds.

Ferries crossing - Edmonds/Kingston

Like ships in the night... A pair of ferries operate this route, and about mid way, they pass. Mt. Rainier is just about visible in the background, over the rear of the ferry. (There's a better image on the return journey.)

Olympic Mountains and Kingston from the Edmonds/Kinston ferry

The approach to Kingston, the end of this line. The journey takes a little over 30 minutes. The peak in the background is NOT Mt. Olympus, which is the highest peak in the Olympic Mountains.
