Cars and Forests

Saturday, April 26

Decided to explore the "New Forest". New is a relative term - it was new at the time of King John, of Magna Carta fame, namely 1215! It was originally set aside for hunting. This area is south west of Southampton, just a few miles. I probably took the long way to get there, but well it worked.

The first place I stopped was the Beaulieu Estate. This is pronounced "Bew Lee". It was originally an abbey, but destroyed by Henry VIII. Mostly now it is just ruins. However, the gate house is still there, and that is now the manor house. There is also a parish church (Church of England). And newer attractions include the National Motor Museum. I enjoyed visiting the motor museum, as it had some interesting exhibits, including Donald Campbell's Bluebird car, the one he used to set the speed record on Lake Eyre.

By the time I had finished here, the rain was getting heavier, so I drove through the New Forest, eventually stopping at Milford On Sea, from which the Isle Of Wight is visible. Then I dawdled back to base, where I was going to drop my stuff and find a place to eat - both Laurie (playing in a band) and Alison (singing in a choir) were out for the night. However, upon return, there was a wonderful smell of a chicken casserole, and a note on the oven door saying help yourself. Which I did, most enjoyably. I thought Alison had gone to a great deal of trouble, until I realised that one of their daughters and some friends were dropping around before heading out for the night.
