Thomas Jefferson's Estate in Virginia

We pointed our rental car towards the south west, and headed to Charlottesville, and more specifically Thomas Jefferson's home. Along the way, we stopped at Civil War Battlefield of Manassas or Bull Run. There were 2 battles here - the first in July 1861, and another in August 1862.

After wandering around the area for a time, we continued our journey to Charlottesville.

Monticello - Jefferson's Home

Brick path leading to red brick house with white pillars in front, partly hidden by trees in autumn colours

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home just outside Charlottesville, Virginia. He designed the building, and continued reworking it through much of his term as US President.

Red brick house, with white dome and pillars in the middle, plus wings just visible on each side

The rear of Monticello (Italian for small mountain, upon which it is located). Note that there are 2 wings to this house, one on each side, only just visible here. At this time, it was common to place the kitchen some distance from the main home. This was to prevent a kitchen fire from damaging the main building.

Leaf covered lawn, trees in autumn colours leading to distant view of lush country side below

The Virginia countryside, as seen from the rear of Monticello. Perhaps not too different to what Jefferson could see.

Graveyard with head markers, one obelisk and surrounded by black iron fence.

The Jefferson graveyard. The obelisk on the right marks Thomas Jefferson's final resting place.
