Around Washington DC

Time to explore around the city a bit more, this being our last full day. Of course, this includes the Smithsonian Museums!

View over older buildings and church

The view from our room in the Best Western at 12th and K Streets. Satellite images show this area has been entirely rebuilt, as for instance, the church in the lower right has gone. Just poking over the top of the church bell tower, left side, is the dome of the Capitol Building; it's a little hard to see.

Very tall obelisk with pointed top, white surface, located behind trees and a pond

The Washington Monument, including the Tidal Basin in front. This was shot from the front of the Jefferson Memorial. The monument is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk. Height is 169 metres.

Rotunda with portico and steps leading up to it; columns surround the building

The Jefferson Memorial honours the third President. Construction began in 1939 and completed in 1942. The bronze statue of Jefferson was added in 1947.

View past thick pillar to fountain and park across the road

The view from the front door of 1600 Pennslyvania Avenue, otherwise known as the White House. The fountain is in the north lawn, and Lafayette Square is across Pennsylvania. Initially the Square was part of the White House grounds, but Jefferson had Pennslyvania Avenue cut through it in 1804.

The tour of the White House, which finished here. I suspect that these tours no longer exist.

Two storey white building, with large portico supported by large columns

Yes, I have been through the entrance to the White House. But no meeting with the President, or anybody else important. In fact, he probably didn't even know I was there :-)

Underground train station, red platform tiles, bright white walls

The (then) newish Washington Metro station at Metro Center station.
