Note that I am deducing this photos were taken over Easter. Mostly because I remember going to Gunnedah one Easter, but also because it's too far for a day trip, and rather useless for an overnight one (spend much of day one driving there, and day two coming back).
This slide is captioned Between Quirindi and Gunnedah, yet the next one is labelled in Quirindi - at sunset. And Quirindi comes before Gunnedah. Anyway, this is rich agricultural land, wherever it is.
Sunset at Quirindi. This description is likely accurate, the journey from Sydney was up the Putty Road to the New England Highway and then turning off at Willow Tree through Quirindi to Gunnedah.
This weekend must have involved a visit to Sidings Springs Observatory, adjacent to the Warrumbungle National Park. This is an optical set of telescopes, on the same longtitude as the Parkes Radio Observatory, allowing simultaneous optical and radio observations.
Being situated on the top of mountains - as is common - the Observatory grounds provide excellent views over the National Park and some remnants of its former volcanoes, as seen here.
Looking west from Siding Springs Observatory, probably towards Coonamble, or perhaps Gulargambone (always wanted to put that name in!).
Like many areas open to the public, the grounds (at least in 1975) are well maintained. I think the (not easily visible) telescope in the dome in the middle is that of the Anglo-Australian telescope, the largest optical telescope (3.9m) in Australia.
The peak with the rocky top is Timor Rock, this time seen from the rear.
The main (3.9m) telescope building.
Mates with red cars! Mine is the Datsun 260Z on the left, and John Sheehan (met at uni) owns the Torana XU-1 on the right (very much like the one I used to own).
