Sligo of Old

The morning saw us touring Sligo. The helpful people at the Tourist Information Office pointed us towards the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, a burial ground used 7,000 years ago! And I thought Roman ruins were impressive at only 2,000 years.

Carrowmore Cemetery, dating back to 5400BC! setting out & mound 51 (main)

The weather was not the most pleasant for walking around a field like this, as Peter and Yvonne head off to look at the burial sites. Being so open, there's no protection from the wind, which was still quite strong.

Tomb 51 is the main tomb, situated on the highest point.

A closer view of tomb 51, which was closed for restoration.

Carrowmore Cemetery, Sligo: Maobh's Cairn - Queen Maeve's burial mound (acquired from earlier builder) on top of Maobh's Cairn

This is Knocknarea Mountain, with the large cairn of Miosgan Meadhbha on top. This is the resting place of Queen Maeve, but it's believed "eminent domain" was used to make it available for her body!

Carrowmore Cemetery, Sligo: Some other mound

Another grave site, although the stones are somewhat dislodged from what was probably there initially.
