Secret inlet to Prince Rupert

Somewhere near Porcher Island, BC

Somewhere near Porcher Island; exact location not known. But there's blue sky and smooth water, and a mountain top disappearing into clouds. Life doesn't get much better!

Approaching Prince Rupert, BC

Prince Rupert Ahead! We passed a large grain terminal before reaching here.

Prince Rupert, BC

More of Prince Rupert. The tall building is, I believe, the Howard Johnson Hotel. We weren't staying there, and didn't much wander into town, so can't say for sure.

Unloading at the Prince Rupert wharf

Disembarking at Prince Rupert. A bus was waiting to take us to our hotel for the night.

The Klondike Express at rest at the wharf. We did a U turn to end in that situation, as we approached, and departed, from the left side of the picture.

Prince Rupert

Prince Rupert is located on an island, but is actually connected to the rest of the world via road and rail links. In fact, it is the only port on the BC coast north of Vancouver so connected! It was founded by Charles Melville Hays, president of the Grand Trunk Railway, who perished on RMS Titanic when returning from Europe after raising money for the project.

We checked in to the hotel, and had some time on our hands before it was time to eat. So, photos first up!

Part of Prince Rupert, as seen from my hotel room

View from my hotel room, looking over part of the town of Prince Rupert.

Wider view of Prince Rupert and its bay

Looking to the left of the above image, showing the inlet with our boat.

Cow Bay

I kid you not - we tied up in Cow Bay! Really! And here's the sign to prove it! Cow Bay is so named because it was the site of a dairy in years gone by.

Yes, there IS a Cow Bay in Prince Rupert - it used to be a dairy!

Alas, like much of North America, a beautiful scene is destroyed by a random collection of cables strung haphazardly around.

Coffee shop and street furniture with cow motif in Cow Bay, Prince Rupert

Cow Bay believes in carrying through with its theme.

Another view of the cow themed coffee shop at Cow Bay, Prince Rupert, BC

The coffee shop is especially "cow oriented", as its sign shows!

Statue commemorating mariners lost at sea

A monument to lost mariners. The inscription reads:

We know you care and pray to God. We are out there in the care of God.
The monument was erected by the Pacific Mariners Memorial Society.

And with that, Kelly and I returned to our hotel for a good meal and good night's sleep. This would be our last night in Canada.
